We'll have the privilege of learning in one of the natural gems of Durban: the Palmiet Nature Reserve (Westville).

So as much fun as we'll have, it will be conducted in a responsible way, as to not disturb the tranquillity of the reserve.

This is not an aftercare for naughty children, where we scream and play sports! This programme is aimed at children with a genuine, keen interest in nature.

Activities will include:

  • Nature walks on the many well-maintained trails in the reserve.

  • Learning about nature via a PowerPoint presentation with photos & videos, using a projector, in the Palmiet hall.

  • Drawing natural subjects and other crafts.

  • Quizzes

  • Birding

  • 'Bug hunts'

  • Night time frog or chameleon search (seasonal- parents would be welcomed)

  • And much, much more!

We will cover all aspects of nature, from plants to big game, as well as environmental threats.

We're going to make it fun yet highly educational!

What afternoon's will consist of...

Few people realise just how lucky we are to live in a country like South Africa. Yes, our crime and corruption is appalling, but our wildlife and heritage make up for that. We're one of the most naturally diverse countries in the world!

We may not have elephants in our back gardens, like some foreign nationals may think, but we still have some pretty amazing creatures in there!

We have come to learn that most children have absolutely no or very little knowledge about this country's unique wildlife.  Children can't name the Big 5, don't know what an elephants tusk is made of etc. This just isn't right. Sadly, wildlife isn't really talked about in schools. It should be though, there should be 'environmental studies'. If the schools won't provide that, we will!

We hope to help children gain a great understanding of the beautiful natural world around them. We want to inspire future conservationists, who will make a big difference in the world.

We also firmly believe that nature is one of the best forms of therapy, and some psychologists which we have spoken to, agree. Children have to go through some awful and traumatic times, and it can severely affect them. We have experienced this ourselves. So we're hoping that children who are going through rough times, and who have an interest in nature, will attend our classes. We believe it will help them in leaps and bounds! We will not make them speak about their issues, or even ask. We do believe that seeing psychologists is crucial, if needed. We aren't qualified psychologists, but we hope to help them through nature.

What we aim to achieve

We hope to inspire and captivate children through the awe-inspiring natural world!
