Leap Day For Frogs!

Today is the national Leap Day For Frogs! A day to raise awareness for these amazing little creatures!

Sadly, frogs are disappearing all over the world, mainly due to habitat destruction.

In Zululand, we are very lucky to have a wide variety of frog species. In fact Zululand has the highest diversity of frogs anywhere in the country! We have over 40 species!

One of the most endangered species in the area, is the Pickersgill's Reed Frog (Hyperolius pickersgilli). These pretty little frogs have a small distribution on the KwaZulu Natal coastline, with their most northern distribution being St.Lucia. They also occur within a few areas around Richards Bay and Mtunzini. The females are usually a light green colour while males are usually brown with a stripe on each side, going over the eye.
