Africa's Largest Cobra!

Africa’s largest Cobra species!

The Forest Cobra (Naja melanoleuca) is a commonly encountered snake species in the Greater Zululand area, especially in coastal forest and sand forest areas (e.g St.Lucia, Mtunzini, Hluhluwe.)

It is a very intelligent, strong and fast snake growing to lengths of over 2,5 meters. It is highly venomous, all though it’s a fairly calm snake if left alone, which retreats quickly. If provoked however, like any animal, it can be aggressive.

It’s excellent at climbing trees. It feeds on small mammals, birds, toads and even other snakes! They do a good job in our ecosystem!

The back half of the body is usally pitch black, while the front half is a light brown colour. Because of the black colouration on them, they are often labelled as 'Black Mambas', therefore they are often killed on sight.

If you are lucky enough to see one of these snakes on a walk, around the house or anywhere in Zululand, just leave it alone and appreciate the sighting of this truly awesome snake, and snap a pic if you can!
